Asian Drama Fever

Watch this! I’ve only seen the first episode and am super excited for the rest. For those of you who haven’t heard of Koizora, it’s a super cute story about high school romance. Some dialogues are pretty mushy but nothing out of the norm in a jdrama. This is not the 2007 movie but actually a very short drama – six episodes total – airing August to September 2008.

[Later… Same day] Lol, I’ve finished the three episodes that have aired! If you think this drama is too immature or mushy for you, stick it through the first 2 episodes. Trust me it gets a lot more interesting and much more emotionally gripping. So many tragedies happen to the unlikely couple of Mika and Hiro, I can’t help but be amazed that they make it through it all. I won’t speak too early since a lot could happen in the second half / the last 3 episodes. I hope they make it.

Here’s what I thought about the first episode:

1) Ohno Satoshi is so good! His character is enclosed in a cloud of mystery and really attracts attention despite Toma’s good-lookingness.

2) Toma is always running. In the opening theme, in the first shot of him chasing a suspect, in almost every scene with him in it. Multiply that by the number of takes he would have to do for each scene and the number of scenes he has in each episode, I think Ikuta Toma is probably in his best shape right now.

3) I didn’t recognize the girl with the supernatural skills but her acting seemed decent.

4) Why does Ohno’s character have more pictures of Ikuta Toma than the average Toma fan? Check out the last picture of his darkroom in the screencaps.

Can’t wait for episode 2!

Summer has officially started with the start of a new season of J-drama. Hopefully the drama gets better with season but Zettai Kareshi and Last Friends are hard to beat in my heart. So far I’ve downloaded the first episodes of Code Blue, Maou, Tomorrow, and Monster Parent. Look under the Summer 2008 category to see which dramas to check out. Here are some titles and the ratings for their first episode:

Monster Parent / モンスターペアレント
Fuji TV, Tuesday 22:00
Episode 1 Ratings: 14.2

Code Blue / コード・ブルー
Fuji TV, Thursday 22:00
Episode 1 Ratings: 21.2

Maou / 魔王
TBS, Friday 22:00
Episode 1 Ratings: 14.0

TBS, Sunday 21:00
Episode 1 Ratings: 16.8

I absolutely adore this drama! It really gets deep into controversial topics like homosexuality and abusive relationships that most Asian drama either avoid or poke fun at. The typical homosexual (very common in Taiwanese drama) is a side character that provides comic relief only and abusive relationship occur only so that the hero can assert his courage and save his love from an evil ex-boyfriend. Last Friends, of course, still has that Asian drama feel but everyone is different this time. The hero is a girl by the name of Ruku who is determined to save her friend Michiru from an abusive relationship which is not so easy for Michiru to leave behind. Throw in someone else with a complicated love history and is silently in love with Ruku and you have an emotions filled drama. Each character has their only story to tell and everyone faces a different challenge. If there’s a theme to Last Friends, it would be Courage & Love.
